Carbon is a magical and diverse material that is both the hardest and softest, an insulator and a conductor, a thermal insulation material and a thermal conductive material. Carbon materials serve in every aspect of life in a low-profile way, from the closest field of our life to the cutting-edge aerospace technology; from charcoal as a source of heat in the survival of human beings to the dazzling diamonds to express love; from the ink used for writing to open human civilization to the carbon nanotubes of the “heavenly ladder” for the expedition to the universe. These are the different states of carbon properties. This lecture will introduce the test methods and examples of Thermal ConductivityThermal conductivity (λ with the unit W/(m•K)) describes the transport of energy – in the form of heat – through a body of mass as the result of a temperature gradient (see fig. 1). According to the second law of thermodynamics, heat always flows in the direction of the lower temperature.thermal conductivity of common carbon materials (such as diamond, carbon paper, carbon fiber, carbon felt, carbon brick, carbon composites, etc.) by LFA.
