Lithium Cobalt Oxide Cathode — Thermal Stability

Lithium cobalt oxide is widely used in cathodes for lithium ion batteries. The stability of the cathode material is an important factor in designing inherently safer, high performing battery systems.

In this example, a sample of delithiated LiCoO2 material was removed from a coin cell and placed in a NETZSCH STA 449 F1 Jupiter®®coupled to the QMS 403 Aëolos® Quadro for analysis. The cathode material shows several discrete Reacción de DecomposiciónA decomposition reaction is a thermally induced reaction of a chemical compound forming solid and/or gaseous products. decomposition steps at increasing temperature rates. With the aid of the attached mass spectrometer it is much easier to understand the decomposition pathways and the underlying structure of the cathode material after cycling.
