Introduction to Additive Manufacturing

Welcome to week 1 of Material Science in Additive Manufacturing! This initial week of our video series is dedicated to generating a common understanding of Additive Manufacturing (AM), the different categories and tradenames along with the typical process flow. Enjoy!

Week 1 of “Material Science in Additive Manufacturing”

This initial week of our “Material Science in Additive Manufacturing” video series is dedicated to generating a common understanding of Additive Manufacturing (AM), the different categories and tradenames along with the typical process flow.

Watch the introduction video to the series here in case you’ve missed it last week! All videos are available in our AM playlist on the NETZSCH Analyzing & Testing YouTube channel. Click here to get to the playlist!

Additive Manufacturing vs. 3D Printing

Before diving deeper into the technologies themselves, we’ll first have a look at the definitions of additive manufacturing and 3D printing and find out what the difference between the two terminologies is.

Description

Categories of Additive Manufacturing technologies

Furthermore, I will shed some light on the different AM technologies with their shared characteristics and the variations that make them unique. They are grouped into seven categories commonly agreed on in different standards (DIN EN ISO/ASTM 52900, formerly ASTM F2792):

  • Vat Photopolymerization
  • Material Extrusion
  • Powder Bed Fusion
  • Material Jetting
  • Binder Jetting
  • Sheet Lamination
  • Directed Energy Deposition

Tradenames in Additive Manufacturing

There are several different names and abbreviations used for one and the same additive manufacturing technology. I explain the reasons for this and show examples of several tradenames for the same additive manufacturing technology category. You will see more of this in the upcoming weeks.

The typical AM process flow

Across all additive manufacturing technologies, the process flow is generally the same. Here, I will explain the process from generating the model to finishing the printed part.

Building a community

This video series is not a one-way road! Please leave your questions in the YouTube commentary. We will answer your questions and also use them to fill our pool of questions from which we will choose the most frequently asked ones to answer in our live events throughout 2021. Furthermore, we encourage you to have discussions in the comment section to also learn from and challenge your peers.

Next week, we will focus on Vat Photopolymerization. Keep your eyes peeled!
