Importance of Rheology and COVID-19

The Kinexus is being used to assist in the development of a new treatment for COVID-19! Dr. Merrill Goldenberg from GoldenBiotech LLC is hoping to provide some relief to those in critical conditions in hospital with COVID virus. During such uncertain and unnerving times, it is certainly pleasing to know that rheology is able to contribute to a solution.

Dr. Merrill Goldenberg and a colleague in lab coats stand beside the Kinexus rheometer, discussing COVID-19 treatment research.

How can rheology help?

As with any pharmaceutical preparation, it is important to ensure both the chemical (covalent bonding) and physical stability (molecular interactions) of the formulation — no matter what the route of administration, e.g. injection (sc, im, iv), oral, ocular, etc. The active ingredient must be uniformly distributed throughout the formulation and not partition/sediment so that the dosage can be easily controlled.

Rheometry is an essential tool for characterizing the physical behavior of liquid formulations. To learn more about the importance of rheology in dispersion stability, you can sign up and watch the webinar here.

We would like to wish GoldenBiotech LLC good luck and every success in their research. Watch this space for more information about the development of this exciting prospect.
