Rheological and Microvascular Perspectives on Blood-Mimicking Fluids

Artificial blood substitutes play an important role in cardiovascular research, especially where realistic flow behavior is required for optical measurement techniques, hemodynamic models, and lab-on-a-chip applications.

In this two-part webinar series, developed in cooperation with the Institute of Machine Design and Tribology and the Institute of Multiphase Processes at Leibniz University Hannover, we explore the development and characterization of advanced multiphase blood-mimicking fluids. The series introduces hydrogel-based artificial erythrocytes, their rheological and tribological characterization, and their potential to reproduce key aspects of blood flow under confined microvascular conditions.

Participants will gain insight into how adaptable artificial blood systems can improve the physiological relevance of in vitro flow studies and support future applications in cardiovascular and microcirculatory research.
