Why Use Thermogravimetric Analysis?

Gain clear insight into thermal stability, composition and mass-loss behavior.

Thermogravimetric analysis measures changes in a sample’s mass under controlled temperature and atmosphere conditions. It supports material characterization throughout research, development and quality control.

Evaluate Thermal Stability

Identify temperature ranges in which your material remains stable and detect the onset of mass loss.
Analyze Decomposition Processes
Examine one or multiple mass-loss steps and investigate the thermal behavior of complex materials.
Determine Composition and Residual Content
Assess volatile components, fillers, moisture, ash content or residual mass, depending on the material and test method.

What Can TGA Help You Investigate?

  • At what temperature does my material begin to decompose?
  • How thermally stable is my material?
  • Does the material lose moisture, solvents or other volatile components?
  • How does it behave in nitrogen, air or oxygen?
  • What is the remaining residue, ash or filler content?
  • Are there multiple decomposition steps?
  • How can I compare incoming materials or batches consistently?
The appropriate temperature range, crucible, gas atmosphere and heating rate depend on the sample and the measurement objective.

How Does TGA Work?

In a thermogravimetric analysis, a sample is continuously weighed while it is heated, cooled or held at a defined temperature under a controlled atmosphere. The resulting curve shows mass change as a function of temperature or time.

  • Prepare the sample
  • Define temperature program and gas atmosphere
  • Measure mass change during the test
  • Interpret the TGA curve and derivative signal (DTG), if required
