Material Extrusion: Material Science in Additive Manufacturing

Material Extrusion is the most widespread Additive Manufacturing technology. This week, we look at the process principle, materials used and at benefits and applications of this technology.

In the last weeks, we focused on the Additive Manufacturing technology Powder Bed Fusion (PBF). We introduced Polymer Powder Bed Fusion using thermoplastics for the built up of components and then moved on to Metal Powder Bed Fusion, often called Selective Laser Melting Temperatures and EnthalpiesThe enthalpy of fusion of a substance, also known as latent heat, is a measure of the energy input, typically heat, which is necessary to convert a substance from solid to liquid state. The melting point of a substance is the temperature at which it changes state from solid (crystalline) to liquid (isotropic melt).Melting (SLM), and polymer Multi Jet Fusion (MJF).

What is Material Extrusion?

Most people are familiar with the Additive Manufacturing technology Material Extrusion. It is a process in which material is selectively dispensed through a nozzle or orifice (ASTM F42 Committee).

Process Principle of Material Extrusion (FDM, FFF)

Before diving into the process principle, I touch on the individual names and tradenames of the Additive Manufacturing technology Material Extrusion. After that, I explain how the build and support material are being extruded to build up the part.

Description

Materials used in Material Extrusion (FDM, FFF)

In this video, I will go into detail about the material properties of the thermoplastic materials used in the Additive Manufacturing technology Material Extrusion. I touch on high-performance materials and newcomer materials that are used in the process.

Benefits and Applications of Material Extrusion Including Composite 3D Printing

What are the advantages and applications of Material Extrusion? This video gives insight into the benefits and disadvantages of this Additive Manufacturing technology. Furthermore, I explain applications of the Material Extrusion process without and with fiber reinfocement, which is often called composite 3D printing.
